Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Meitsje made? Meitjse is handmade in Dunedin, New Zealand.
What is the jewellery made of? I mostly work in sterling silver, brass and polymer clay. I often add other elements such as coloured sand and paint or ink to the clay creating texture and custom colours. I only use quality metal findings such as titanium, sterling silver, and 14 karat gold-filled brass.
Are your products hypoallergenic? Hypoallergenic means that something is unlikely to cause a reaction. The earrings which have a stud backing are made with titanium or surgical steel grade ear posts and backings. Both of these metals are considered hypoallergenic.
Earring hooks are either sterling silver or 14 karat gold-filled brass. Gold-filled means that it contains a thicker bonded outer layer of gold in comparison to gold-plated options. For most people, gold-filled metal will cause no reaction.
Check the details of each item to get a better idea of the metal/s being used.
What does "slow made" mean to Meitsje and why is it important? Slow made is an approach to producing items which takes into consideration all aspects of the supply chain and in doing so, aims to respect people and the environment. It also means spending more time on the design process, ensuring the quality of each piece.
How many items of each design will you make? It varies - some designs are one offs but for those that are not - generally no more than 5 pairs (or items) will be made in each specific design.
Because of the methods of production and the handmade nature of the jewellery, any of the patterned pieces are completely unique, no two are ever exactly the same.
How long will it take to receive an order? I usually start making as soon as your order is confirmed. I do this to eliminate as much waste as possible so I’m not carrying stock that is sitting on shelf waiting for an order. Timeframes will be discussed on an individual basis.
What is the best way to care for polymer clay jewellery? Polymer clay is lightweight and durable but should still be treated with care. Your jewellery can get wet, but I recommend removing it before swimming or showering. To clean your jewellery you can wipe it using a soft damp cloth with or without hand soap. Don't store your jewellery in direct sunlight. Please don't sleep in your jewellery. With a little care, your jewellery will last a long time.
Where do you ship to? At the moment I regi;aru ship throughout New Zealand and to Australia but I’m happy to consider requests from other locations
Do you have any stockists where I can buy your products in person? Meitsje can be found at Guild and the Public Art Gallery shop in Dunedin New Zealand.
