Meet the maker
Meitjse is handcrafted by Mel Postma, weaving contemporary design into thoughtfully made, wearable stories.
Meitsje started out as a creative outlet in 2021 after suffering from corporate burn out and facing some big changes in my life. I rediscovered a love for making again after having studied silversmithing and jewellery design in Melbourne many years before. Meitsje is now run out of my tiny studio in my adopted home town of Dunedin, New Zealand. I’m often accompanied by my cat “Mooch” who thinks she is in charge of quality control.
Meitsje means “to make, create or fix” in the Frisian language which is a nod to my heritage on my dad’s side.
My jewellery is mostly made from mixed metals (recycled where possible), resin, gemstones, found objects and polymer clay.
I would describe my style as quite minimal and organic. I like for things to be well made and considered, but not necessarily perfect. I love being able to see when things are made by hand.
